Marine Safety – also known as Prevention – is responsible for working to “prevent” safety, security and environmental incidents in marine environments, including both fresh and salt waters, through direct and indirect missions supporting USCG actions, member activities and public outreach.
Southwest District, Southern Region supports two Sectors: Los Angeles/Long Beach and San Diego, which cover southern California, southern Nevada, southern Utah and Arizona, including the coastline, Colorado River and its lakes as well as natural and man-made reservoirs within this huge area.
Training involves three areas: coursework, experience and service, and members may earn the Marine Safety Training Ribbon and/or the M-Pro Pin if desired. Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (MS/MEP) qualifications are available for members to earn and offered by the Sector to fill Sector needs through augmentation. Some missions are performed under USCG orders and others are performed under Assignment to Duty.
There are many missions that do not require a qualification for members to make significant contributions to the MS/MEP program goals – serving as an MS Staff Officer, providing MS/MEP information at PA booths, PE classes, Vessel Safety Checks, or Program Visits are a few. Members may also make public presentations to community organizations about marine safety and environmental protection topics that provide prevention through education.
So come join the fun…..there really is “Something for Everyone”! Visit the Prevention Directorate website at the link below to find more information about these programs.
